Viscous boundary layers at the sidewall of a convection cell

چکیده
Profiles of both the mean value and the standard deviation of the local fluctuating velocity were directly measured near the sidewall of a cubic convection cell using water as the working fluid. Scaling laws with the Rayleigh number Ra for various boundary layer quantities have been established over the range of Ra from 10 –10 and were found to be substantially different from those near the horizontal conducting plates where large temperature gradients exist. This in turn signifies the interplay between the temperature and the velocity fields at the horizontal plates. The length scale associated with the root-mean-square velocity is found to be analogous to the thickness of the wall layer, while the length associated with the mean velocity is analogous to the thickness of the boundary layer, in conventional wall-bounded shear flows. Our measurements also reveal that the large-scale circulation is quite uniform over a large region on the sidewall plate. @S1063-651X~98!06807-X#

Interacting oscillatory boundary layers and wall modes in modulated rotating convection
Thermal convection in a rotating cylinder near onset is investigated using direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations with the Boussinesq approximation in a regime dominated by the Coriolis force. For thermal driving too small to support convection throughout the entire cell, convection sets in as alternating pairs of hot and cold plumes in the sidewall boundary layer, the so-c...
متن کاملHALL AND LON-SLIP EFFECTS ON MAGNETO-MICROPOLAR FLUID WITH COMBINED FORCED AND FREE CONVECTION IN BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW OVER A HORIZONTAL PLATE WITH VISCOUS DISSIPATION
In this paper, we study the effects of Hall and ion-slip currents on the steady magneto-micropolar of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid over a horizontal plate by taking in to account the viscous dissipation effects. By means of similarity solutions, deviation of fundamental equations on the assumption of small magnetic Reynolds number are solved numerically by using qu...
متن کاملNon-Darcian Mixed Convection Flow in Vertical Composite Channels with Hybrid Boundary Conditions
In this article, the effects of viscous dissipation and inertial force on the velocity and temperature distributions of the mixed convection laminar flow in a vertical channel partly filled with a saturated porous medium have been studied. In this regard, the Brinkman–Forchheimer extended Darcy model was adopted for the fluid flow in the porous region. In addition, three different viscous dissi...
متن کاملTurbulent convection with “disconnected” top and bottom boundary layers
– We have done an experimental study of turbulent thermal convection in water using a cell with a baffle placed at its mid-height, over a range of Ra that spans from 2 × 10 to 2× 10. It was found that in this case the large-scale circulation is not able to advect heat between the top and bottom plates and heat has to be carried across the baffle mainly by thermal plumes. Furthermore, the measur...
متن کاملBoundary Shear Stress in a Trapezoidal Channel
This paper focuses on a hydraulic radius separation approach used to calculate the boundary shear stress in terms of bed and wall shear stress proposed in a trapezoidal channel. The average bed and sidewall shear stress in smooth trapezoidal open channels are derived after using Guo & Julien (2005) early equations taking a part of an investigation to cover both rectangular and trapezoidal chann...
